I'm just sure that has to be one of the large World Exposition buildings on the lid there in mother of pearl, unfortunately it's lost most of the painted decoration from the smooth pearl so I can't quite tell. Possibly the Crystal Palace from the 1851 world's fair, anyone? You can see the Union Jack waving prominently on the far right flagpole though so it is possible that it's an English Victorian piece. A lovely piece and nicely sized for display at just under 10" wide. I've always loved these old papier mache pieces with architectural scenes or eglomise (reverse painted glass) panels set into the lids. Wonderful decorative accents all!
Good to very good condition. There are a few exterior surface marks and a couple of small 'ding's on the front edge of the lid (above the lock) but no real chipping, cracks or structural damage. The interior is lined in a floral print paper, possibly original. The lock, etc. is fully intact but it's missing a key. See pictures for all measurements.
