Fabulous & rare 19th century French Napoleon III era hair art mourning brooch in elegant original beveled glass & 18k gold setting! Usually these items were memorials to those loved ones lost, and are referred to as mourning or memorial pieces. But they were also woven from the hair of loved ones still living, and given to friends or family members as a memory token of love and friendship, or a new bride might wear one with her hair and that of her new husband. The hair of children born to a family might also be kept in this manner. This one is rather unique because of the gold setting and that there are two different braid patterns held within the small display. Perfect for the collector!
Excellent condition. No markings that I can find but the metal has been tested and is 18k gold. A very slight scratch or two on the glass, a few tiny specs/particles inside. No damage to the setting or pin. See pictures for measurements.
