Superb miniature painting, yet not signed by the artist, and no identification of who this beautiful woman is. I know the dates based on fashion, and she has 'sat' for her portrait in about 1820s. Of special interest in this one is the gown and the jewelry. She holds a quizzing glass, the extra long chain of which looped and attached. Gold bracelets, likely a matching on on her unseen wrist, and a bodice brooch - all the height of fashion in her day. Look at how perfectly that 5/8" face (chin to hairline) is when enlarged. The work of an incredible miniaturist. It's hard to imagine how a signature isn't there for us. This is top drawer!
Excellent condition throughout. You might notice the wafer is flat at top. That isn't from a break, but is the natural original state of this wafer in the artist's hands, as there is also brown paint on that thin edge. It is completely hidden from view when in frame. The original slightly convex cover glass is complete and has protected this painting perfectly for 200 or so years now. A magnificent piece, this one!
