What a sweet caddy, this! From my own collections, made much like the fabulous tea caddies of the same period. I believe it is English in origin. The caps on the 3 pristine scent bottles within look like sterling silver but are not. There are no hallmarks to help us. They're silver plate or silver metal and have cork interior on each rather than stoppers, typical of English methods of the era. Fine faceted and perfect scent bottles, not a chip anywhere. The caddy or casket is quite superb, a couple of bug bites we've marked with 'x' for you to review, but none on the top/lid nor on front so it displays perfectly. The mottled cognac to chocolate coloration of the tortoise shell veneer is my personal favorite. A silver metal cartouche is monogrammed C B, and the matching escutcheon, working key and lock all are complete. Measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent for age and type. Quite splendid, all in all, without any cracks or chips on those panels of finely crafted tortoise shell - though bugs did lunch a bit on 4 places along bottom, one side and back and we've marked those spots with "x" for your full review. Small, could almost disappear from view with a touch-up brown, but we want you to know they're there. Old felted bottom has deterioration but is intact. The interior of the box is really excellent for age. Silk lined with ivory lip and dividers, the 3 scent bottles are obviously originals and fit perfectly. No chips, no cracks or nips to the cut flasks, and caps are in fine form with a very small push dent to one. Cork inside rather than a stoppered bottle, more typical of English caddies. A dream! I know I'll regret it when this one is gone, but it's time.
IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world.
Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details.
