Fabulous & rare antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 22 3/4" tall jewelry chest with four chamois or mountain goat figures on top, ornate edelweiss decoration and an amazing array of folding compartments and drawers! WoW! We've had many of these jewelry chests over the years but this one is quite unique, actually the first (I believe) in this unique style. Most have had a rectangular form, this one squared and immense really, standing just under 23". The lid with figures opens upward, the upper front have folds outward and each of those sides contains three small compartments that also fold out. All compartments and drawers, including the lid, with the original pale blue tufted silk or satin lining and this one even has the original working lock with brass or bronze handled skeleton key. A truly amazing piece, in size, style and ornamentation!
Very good condition, age considered. As you can see, there are losses to the horns and ears on the chamois figures and the tallest of the figures was broken off at some point and re-glued at the ankle area with a small section of on back leg missing. Some fading to the silk or satin lining but it's really in great shape, age considered. As noted, it has a working lock with key but the lock pin mounted to the lid panel is a replacement and slightly smaller than the original would have been but works. See pictures for all measurements.
