Elegant French silver etui mounted with 4 cabochons of natural Sardonyx agate stone. A late 1700s vest 'necessaire' of extraordinary value complete with eating utensils, scissors, sterling silver maker-marked medicine spoon, stiletto, as well as a sharp knife, a table knife and a fabulous map measuring tool also in silver (folding ruler). All but 4 fittings are full. missing a pencil, tweezer, ear wax spoon, bodkin (needle) and 1 other small thin item. It is possible an item or 2 might be pushed too far into the case, too, which sometimes happens.. Remarkably well preserved for age. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, A fine tight almost invisible hairline on one panel of stone (marked), and not a single nip nor chip nor flaw to the balance of 4 semi-precious stones which decorate the exterior, and no dents or losses to the etui. Amazing to find it so complete, you can view the photos to see that all pieces are unbroken, and the rare nested pair of 2 handles remain with the set. The scissors remain sharp, as do the knife blades, though you can see the old steel has darkened. No rust. Hinge and pushbutton clasp each remain in excellent condition, as well. Exceptional museum quality piece.
