Offering a very unique early 1800s table snuff of extra large size. A full 5.5" wide, it's made like smaller and later ones but with such superb refinement. The exterior has been veneered with a very unique layer of wood - look at the grain. I've tried to figure it out and initially thought it was just the tortoise shell worked in a grained pattern. But upon closer review, I'm quite sure it's some sort of very hard wood. The interior is thickly worked natural shell, as you can see. And the stringing tested 18k gold. This has been a very fine work of craftsman's artistry. The hinge is entire carved and pinned, working smoothly and no warp. The box closes well, has just a couple of small imperfections of age which I have marked in the images for your review. It is one from my own collections, which I'm beginning to disburse now. Full measurements noted on the box.
IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world.
Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details. We do hold a valid USFWS license, as well, for import/export, but additional time is required for export, and we are not exporting at this time.
