From the era of the Louis Kings of France, XV to XVI period (c.1750-80), such intricately hand carved and latticed guards and sticks which are unbroken and elevate it to museum quality. Backed by thin mother of pearl for that shimmer of color behind and between the figures in the monture. Guards are complete and in its entirety, this one is a work of art. Hand painted on both front and back leaf, it is also signed by the artist. Leaves of paper, French Romantic Era themes. I've heard from a friend in France who is a true expert in fans, telling me the dates are correct, but also that this might well be a fan from the celebration of the Marriage of Marie-Antoinette and King Louis XVI. I'll be researching a bit more.
Very good to excellent with age and type considered. No breaks on carved guards, sticks or ribs. The tips of folds show some splitting, as you can see. Perhaps would benefit by a little professional rice paper restoration, but I will leave that decision to next owner. I'm not unhappy with it shown just as it is. Consider, if you will, those hand painted and artist-signed leaves are each just beautiful works of art. One you might wish to display in a fan frame for both preservation and enjoyment of the truly incredible carved and foil figural monture. Shown from all angles, you can see that it also has paste diamonds set on the pivot head. Tiny loss to the mother of pearl backing - look closely, not enough to diminish beauty or pleasure.
