Striking & large antique to vintage 10 5/8" Russian malachite jewelry or desk box in the shape of a book with brass strip or string inlays and recently relined with a newer beige moire style fabric! Overly heavy, this one weighs just under six pounds and it appears to be malachite veneers over a black slate or possibly even unpolished marble? A beautiful piece, a veritable marquetry of different malachite panels and in wonderful condition, with a nod to the relined interior. A fantastic decorative accent.
Very good to excellent condition. I see no chips, cracks or loss to the malachite. As noted, the interior is relined and the fabric, while in the moire style, is not silk. See images for all measurements.
